CHILDREN & DIVORCE
The "children of divorce" and the work of a Guardian Ad Litem
Divorce does not necessarily cause damage to children’s development and adjustment. Extensive research and experience shows that it is the exposure to hostility and conflict that causes such damage to children. Children who remain living in the home with both parents who actively engage in displays of anger and hostility are as likely to be scarred as are children whose parents engage in divorce “warfare”.
Children adjust best when they have stable and loving relationships with both of their parents and when their parents remain focused on cooperative parenting (co-parenting) and the children’s best interests. Children whose parents finds themselves happily living separate and apart generally will raise happy and well-adjusted children.
Nancy is a Certified Attorney Guardian Ad Litem (G.A.L.). She is appointed by the courts to neutrally investigate matters which relate to children whose parents are involved in family court legal actions. Often when divorce proceedings are pending, the Guardian Ad Litem will meet with the parents and children, speak with other interested parties, and secure medical, educational and therapeutic records in an effort to gather information that will be helpful to the parties, lawyers and courts. Ultimately if the child-related matters are not amicably resolved, Nancy will participate in Trial of those issues and offer the court the benefit of her observations and opinions.
